Summer MIIND Institute Film Series Showing The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil
BY BROOKE BRYAN
MCGREGOR AUDITORIUM 4 PM, TUESDAY AUGUST 19
This film documents Cuba’s “Special Period,” their transition from a highly mechanized industrialized agriculture system to local, urban methods of organic farming when the Soviet Union Collapsed in 1990– abruptly cutting Cuba’s oil imports by half, and their food imports by 80%.
The film includes an introduction to the concept of Peak Oil, the time when world oil production reaches an all-time high before declining yields bring about substantially higher prices– affecting fuel costs, the consumer products industry, and especially– industrialized agriculture.
Cuba is the only nation in the world to experience a precipitant decline in access to petroleum, paralleling forecasts for post-peak supply declines in nations dependent upon inexpensive and readily available petroleum resources.
From the website: “This fascinating and empowering film shows how communities pulled together, created solutions, and ultimately thrived in spite of their decreased dependence on imported energy.”
The documentary is directed, co-written, and co-produced by members of the Arthur Morgan Institute for Community Solutions– a local non-profit in Yellow Springs with world wide influence in Peak Oil solutions.
